WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 12, 2013) – The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors has appointed Robin Newhouse, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, as chair of PCORI’s Methodology Committee and Steven Goodman, MD, MHS, PhD, as the Committee’s new vice-chair.

Newhouse, professor and chair of organizational systems and adult health at the University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore, has served as the Committee’s vice chair since December 2012. Both she and Goodman, associate dean for clinical and translational research at the Stanford University School of Medicine, have served on the Committee since it was established by the Government Accountability Office in January 2011. Newhouse takes over the chair position from Sherine Gabriel, MD, MSc, Dean of the Mayo Medical School. Gabriel will remain a Committee member.

“With their exceptional expertise and commitment to advancing patient-centered outcomes research, Drs. Newhouse and Goodman already have made substantial contributions to the Methodology Committee’s groundbreaking work,” said PCORI Board Chair Eugene Washington, MD, MSc. “The Committee will benefit greatly from their leadership as it continues to fulfill its legislative mandate to develop and improve the science and methods of comparative clinical effectiveness research.”

“I’m pleased and excited that Drs. Newhouse and Goodman have agreed to lead the Committee as it helps to promote the uptake of the initial set of Methodology Standards adopted in 2012, and work with researchers and others across the healthcare community to further refine and improve those standards,” added PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, MD, MPH.

Newhouse and Goodman immediately assumed their new roles.

Newhouse conducts research ranging from cluster randomized trials to systematic reviews focusing on quality of care, implementation of evidence-based processes among clinicians, and outcomes research in healthcare delivery systems. She received her BS, MS and PhD in nursing from the University of Maryland School of Nursing and her MGA in health care administration from the University of Maryland’s University College.

In addition to his work at Stanford, Goodman is Editor-in-chief of Clinical Trials: Journal of the Society for Clinical Trials and senior statistical editor for Annals of Internal Medicine. He also serves as scientific co-advisor of the Medical Advisory Panel of the Blue Cross – Blue Shield Technology Assessment Program. He received an AB from Harvard University, an MD from the New York University School of Medicine, and an MHS in Biostatistics and PhD in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
