Washington, D.C. (January 22, 2012) – The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors has appointed Sally C. Morton, PhD, as a Statistical Methodology Expert to PCORI’s Methodology Committee. Morton will provide the committee with advice on statistical methods, techniques and analysis for patient-centered outcomes research.
“Dr. Morton is one of the nation’s leading experts on statistics and methodology,” said Methodology Committee Chair Sherine Gabriel, MD, MSc, Dean of Mayo Medical School. “Her expert input will be an asset to the Methodology Committee as it continues to work with the scientific community broadly to develop and refine methods for patient-centered outcomes research.”
Morton is professor and chair of the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health and directs its Comparative Effectiveness Research Core. She holds secondary appointments in the Clinical and Translational Science Institute and the Department of Statistics. Her research interests include the use of statistics in evidence-based medicine, particularly meta-analysis. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on National Statistics, and chair-elect of the Statistics Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
"I’m honored to assist PCORI in determining the best methodology to help patients and their caregivers make the most-informed health care decisions,” Morton said.
PCORI’s Board of Governors approved Dr. Morton’s appointment as an expert to the Committee during a special webinar/teleconference on Dec. 18, 2012. In her new role, Morton will provide guidance previously provided by Sharon-Lise Normand, PhD, who left the Committee at the end of last year. The Board does not appoint Committee members; that is the task of the Comptroller General of the United States. But in naming experts to the Committee, the Board can add support and technical knowledge until the Comptroller General appoints new members.
