The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute hosted a workshop on December 5 in Alexandria, Va., to present and receive feedback on PCORI’s draft multi-stakeholder process for generating and prioritizing specific research questions. Once implemented, the process will lead to recommendations for topic-specific funding announcements that complement PCORI’s broad Funding Announcements.
Workshop participants included patients, stakeholders and methodologists, many of whom have tested the draft research topic selection process through a series of practice exercises this fall. Their feedback and that from the workshop participants helped PCORI refine the process to ensure it addresses the needs of patients and those who care for them.
In addition to presentations from PCORI staff on the draft process, the workshop addressed a number of methodological issues in the identification and prioritization of research questions, and highlighted the experiences of other organizations that have implemented patient and stakeholder-driven topic generation and prioritization processes.
A pilot group testing the draft process is underway and its work was a focus of the workshop. The feedback from the pilot and the workshop, including any recommended changes to the draft prioritization process, is included in a report that was published in early 2013.
