Funding Opportunities

PCORI offers a variety of funding opportunities designed to advance patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) in accordance with our National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda. We have five priorities — Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options; Improving Healthcare Systems; Communication and Dissemination Research; Addressing Disparities; and Improving Methods for Conducting Patient-Centered Outcomes Research. Each represents a line of inquiry that addresses currently unmet needs of patients, their caregivers, clinicians and other healthcare system stakeholders in making personalized healthcare decisions across a wide range of conditions and treatments.

Most of our primary research funding is awarded through PCORI Funding Announcements (PFAs), broad calls for patient-centered CER projects aligned with our priorities. We issued our first PFAs in May 2012 and plan three funding cycles per year. We’ll also issue targeted funding announcements seeking proposals to study specific high-priority topics, offer special one-time funding opportunities, and fund contracts research through RFPs.

Reminder: PCORI is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization. All PCORI funding announcements will be posted here. PCORI funding announcements will not be published in the Federal Register.

Funding Center

Our Funding Center contains all of the information and resources applicants need to apply for current PCORI Funding Announcements (PFAs) and other open funding opportunities. You can also find out about funded projects.

Pilot Projects

Before we began funding primary research, we issued a call for proposals under our Pilot Projects Program, which supports research that addresses a broad range of questions about methods for engaging patients in the health and healthcare research and dissemination process. We approved 50 Pilot Project awards  in 2012.  Learn more here.

The PCORI Challenge

We are exploring the “open innovation” approach to problem-solving by tapping into the expertise of our stakeholder communities to help us advance “research done differently.” Our inaugural challenge is to develop a patient/research “matchmaking” system that will effectively connect potential partners interested in seeking funding from us for rigorous patient-centered outcomes research.

Other Contract Research

We make a variety of other contracted research opportunities available in the form Requests for Proposals (RFPs), which are awarded through a competitive process. Each RFP contains its own statement of work, requirements and evaluation criteria. When available, you can find out more about such opportunities here.
