Funding Opportunities

We offer a number of funding opportunities. Most of our primary research funding is awarded through PCORI Funding Announcements (PFAs), broad calls for projects aligned with our National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda. We have five priorities — Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options; Improving Healthcare Systems; Communication and Dissemination; Addressing Disparities; and Accelerating Patient-Centered and Methodological Research. Each represents a line of inquiry that addresses unmet needs of patients, caregivers, clinicians and other healthcare stakeholders in making personalized clinical decisions across a wide range of conditions, populations, and treatments.

We have four funding cycles per year. We also issue “targeted” funding announcements seeking proposals to study specific high-priority topics, offer special one-time funding opportunities, have funded a series of “Pilot Projects” studying methods for engaging stakeholders in research, and fund contract research through Requests for Proposals (RFPs).

Reminder: PCORI is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization. All PCORI funding announcements will be posted here. PCORI funding announcements will not be published in the Federal Register.

Funding Center

Our Funding Center contains all of the resources applicants need to apply for current PFAs and other open funding opportunities. You can also find out about future funding plans and timelines for closed PFAs and other funding opportunities.

PCORI Funding Awards

Our primary research awards are approved by our Board of Governors and based on applications responding to our PFAs. Applications are reviewed by panels of scientists, patients and others from across the healthcare community.  Learn more here.

The PCORI Challenge

Our first Challenge sought ideas to develop a patient/researcher “matching” system that will effectively connect potential partners interested in seeking funding from us for patient-centered CER projects. Meet our winners here.

Other Contract Research

We make research opportunities available through Requests for Proposals (RFPs), which are awarded through a competitive process. Each contains its own statement of work, requirements, and evaluation criteria. When available, you can find out more about such opportunities here.
