Washington, D.C. – The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has appointed Robin Newhouse, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, Vice-Chair of the institute’s Methodology Committee. Newhouse has served on the Committee since its establishment by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) in January 2011.

“Dr. Newhouse has demonstrated a tremendous commitment to improving the field of patient-centered outcomes research,” said Committee Chair Sherine Gabriel, MD, MSc, Dean of Mayo Medical School. “We look forward to her continued leadership as we work to fulfill our legislative mandate to standardize and promote rigorous methods for research.”

Newhouse is Professor and Chair Organizational Systems and Adult Health at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She was nominated to serve as Methodology Committee Vice-Chair by the members of the Committee. Her nomination was reviewed and endorsed by the PCORI Board of Governors Nominating Committee and approved by the Board at their November 19 meeting. She will assume her new role on Jan. 1, 2013. Newhouse conducts research ranging from cluster randomized trials to systematic reviews focusing on quality of care, implementation of evidence-based processes among clinicians and outcomes research in healthcare delivery systems. She received her BS, MS and PhD in nursing from University of Maryland School of Nursing and her MGA in health care administration from University of Maryland University College.

“PCORI has an unprecedented opportunity to transform the way we approach research and make evidence more reliable and responsive to patient’s needs,” said Newhouse. “I am honored to be involved with an organization that presents such potential, and I am eager to continue working toward our goal of establishing the highest standards for patient-centered research.”

“Widely accepted standards for patient-centered research are the foundation of PCORI’s ability to provide trustworthy information to patients and those who care for them. Dr. Newhouse brings impressive credentials and experience to help lead this important work,” said PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, MD, MPH.
