Project Summary

The project goal is to improve the care and support of patients in Montana with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), their families, and caregivers across all stages of the disease. To accomplish this, a comprehensive approach at individual, community, and state levels is needed to:

  1. raise public awareness of ADRD

  2. increase early disease detection

  3. ensure best practice approaches to management of disease and associated psychosocial issues

  4. identify and address caregiver burden

  5. improve quality of life for patients, their families, and caregivers.

Our primary objective is to form a statewide advisory board composed of patients, family members, caregivers, healthcare professionals, health service researchers, and state advocacy and health agencies committed to improving the care of patients with ADRD and supporting their caregivers. Funding from this award will enable us to build relationships with patients, groups, researchers, and organizations interested in this important issue through two face-to-face meetings and six virtual meetings. We will also create a solid communication plan to connect interested stakeholders and community members by setting up an online interactive communication site. Additionally, the advisory board will develop a governance structure and create a charter and strategic plan. Finally, we will begin sharing challenges faced at the local, state, regional, and national levels; identifying important gaps in care; and developing plans to address these gaps through comparative effectiveness research.
