PCORI Funding for Rare Disease Research: Spring 2015 Broad PFAs

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) hosted a webinar highlighting a special pool of $12 million for funding rare disease research as part of the Spring 2015 Broad PCORI Funding Announcements (PFAs). This funding is available through the broad national priorities areas: Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options, Improving Healthcare Systems, Communication and Dissemination Research, and Addressing Disparities. PCORI is especially interested in the investigation of strategies that address care for patients with life-threatening or chronically debilitating rare diseases. These illnesses are of such low prevalence—defined as conditions that affect fewer than 200,000 people in the United States (i.e., less than 1 in 1,500 persons)—that special efforts, such as combining data across large populations, may be needed to address them.

This webinar provided an overview of PCORI and the background behind this special pool of funds to ensure that applicants submitting applications for this rare disease research funding have the information needed to submit a responsive letter of intent (LOI). PCORI staff were available to answer questions.
