Patient-centeredness has been a strong interest of Issidoros Sarnopoulos throughout his career. He has a unique background that combines social neuroscience and public health research. When he was assistant professor at Michigan State University, he designed and conducted research on the biological impact of patient-centeredness in the context of the doctor-patient relationship. Results of this work have been published recently in two articles in the leading journal for medical communication, Patient Education and Counseling. The journal editor described the work as “groundbreaking.” It was the first neuroimaging study ever conducted on the topic, and provided the first biological evidence of positive outcomes occurring when the patient’s voice is heard. His current work in evaluating public and community health programs has expanded his interest in patient-contentedness, and helped him appreciate the largely untapped potential of bringing patients on as full partners in developing studies and interpreting outcomes that impact their health and well-being.
