Mary Blegen is an Adjunct Professor at the College of Nursing, University of Colorado at Denver, Professor Emerita in the Department of Community Health Systems at the University of California, San Francisco, and a Fellow at the American Academy of Nursing. Her research focuses on outcomes in relation to nurse staffing, working conditions, safety climate, and inter-disciplinary teamwork. These research projects primarily used evaluation of patient outcomes to determine the effectiveness of structures and processes of healthcare. Specific projects include: Interdisciplinary safety culture, and patient experiences of care; Relationships between nurse staffing and quality of care in Academic Hospitals, Community hospitals; and Nursing Homes; and Hospital system load effects on adverse incidents. Previously, she served as the Director of the Center for Patient Safety in the School of Nursing, UCSF, and as a Senior Scholar for the Interdisciplinary Fellow in the Quality Scholars program in the VA Health System. She holds a RN from Augustana College and a MA and PhD from the University of Iowa.
Blegen served as a member of the Advisory Panel on Improving Healthcare Systems from April 2013 to April 2016.
