Project Summary
This project focuses on the planning phase of PCORI’s Engagement Rubric–specifically, the identification of topics and development of research questions and comparators to be studied related to prevention or treatment of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). We will locate and recruit patient partners age 65 and over from rural Wisconsin and provide training to build skills needed for patients to feel comfortable participating in a stakeholder panel related to HAI research. We will provide training to build knowledge and capacity related to the research process, PCOR and CER, whether comparing prevention strategies or treatment options. We will then engage patients and other stakeholders in helping clinicians and researchers thoroughly examine future research needs based on what the patients see as important regarding HAIs, practical treatment options, and what urgently really needs to be studied.
The projected outputs from this project are the identification of HAI patient partners; development and implementation of orientations on HAIs, what problems exist, what’s being done, and the need for patient engagement to advance HAI treatment; facilitation of training on basic research methods, designs, and CER’s importance for HAI prevention and treatment goals; and establishment of a panel of older rural patients, family members, and stakeholders ready to work on HAI treatment outcomes research.
Project collaborators include the Wisconsin Network for Research Support; Wisconsin Broadcasters Association; Community Academic Aging Research Network; the Aging and Disability Resource Centers; Veterans Service Organizations and patient advocacy organizations specific to C. diff such as the C. diff Foundation; the Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) Foundation; and the Peggy Lillis Memorial Foundation.
