Project Summary
The aim of the Tier II Pipeline to Proposal Award is to continue our Tier I goal to improve those clinical and functional postoperative lung cancer surgery outcomes self-identified as most important to patients and families. Our goal will be accomplished through two related efforts: continued development of our established social media patient engagement platform #LCSM Chat (Lung Cancer Social Media Chat; LCSMChat.com); and creation of a UC Davis Community Stakeholder Advisory Panel (CSAP) comprising patients, family members, lung cancer advocacy group representatives, healthcare providers, and researchers. During the Tier II period, we will further develop and augment #LCSM Chat. Via this social media platform and public medical communication, we will develop two-way learning so that healthcare providers understand the cognitive challenges, biases, and concerns (e.g., lung cancer stigma) of patients and families. In addition, we will introduce strategies for evidence-based decision making for patients and families; help them accurately understand concepts of risk and benefit, and percent outcomes in lung cancer surgery; and disseminate evidence-based information on the treatment of lung cancer, including surgery and other therapies, and the results of comparative effectiveness research. We will also form the CSAP, which will take insights learned from #LCSM Chat and in-person focus groups—as well as its own experiences—and develop comparative effectiveness studies and patient-centered clinical improvement projects that are important and relevant to patients and other stakeholders.
