Project Summary

The relationship between limited literacy and adverse health outcomes has been well documented; however, the research methods to advance the intersection of health literacy and patient centered outcomes research has not been developed. Important next steps include cultivating the role of health literacy in PCOR and advancing patient centered methods in health literacy research. This project promotes these objectives with two annual national professional interdisciplinary conferences and related dissemination activities for investigators dedicated to health literacy and PCOR research. This meeting will be designed to provide a venue to focus attention on intermeshing health literacy and PCOR. The conference will be an incubator for young investigators and encourage a cross-disciplinary exchange of knowledge, collaboration, and creativity. We aim to create an environment in which controversial topics within the research community can be openly discussed. More information is available on the conference website at http://www.bumc.bu.edu/healthliteracyconference.

The projected output from this project is a Health Literacy Conference focused on the intersection of health literacy research and PCOR,encouraging a cross-disciplinary exchange of knowledge, collaboration, and creativity, serving as an incubator for the professional development for young investigators, and fostering an environment in which controversial research topics can be openly discussed, publication of two free full-text special issues on the nexus of health literacy and PCOR research of the Journal of Health Communication and the creation of a webinar curriculum.

Project collaborators include health literacy researchers; patient and caregiver stakeholders; Journal of Health Communication; and the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Health Literacy Roundtable.

This project was originally titled Promoting the Intersection of Research on Health Literacy and Patient-Centered Care.
