Suggest a Topic Area for New Methodology Standards
Improving scientific methods is a central piece of the PCORI Methodology Committee’s charge and mission, and developing standards is a key component of this work. By providing specific guidance for the design and conduct of individual projects, standards help ensure research produces more valid, trustworthy, and useful information.
To date, the Methodology Committee has created or endorsed Methodology Standards that provide guidance in 16 topic areas, for a total of 65 standards:
- Standards for Formulating Research Questions
- Standards Associated with Patient Centeredness
- Standards for Data Integrity and Rigorous Analyses
- Standards for Preventing and Handling Missing Data
- Standards for Heterogeneity of Treatment Effects (HTE)
- Standards for Data Registries
- Standards for Data Networks as Research-Facilitating Structures
- Standards for Causal Inference Methods
- Standards for Adaptive and Bayesian Trial Designs
- Standards for Studies of Medical Tests
- Standards for Systematic Reviews
- Standards on Research Designs Using Clusters
- Standards for Studies of Complex Interventions
- Standards for Qualitative Methods
- Standards for Mixed Methods Research
- Standards for Individual Participant-Level Data Meta-Analysis (IPD-MA)
The process of developing and updating the standards has involved extensive interaction with the patient-centered outcomes research community. The Methodology Committee continues to seek input from the public regarding potential topics areas for the development of new standards. Per the requirements of the PCORI authorizing legislation, all draft standards proposed by the Methodology Committee will be posted publicly for comment for a period of 45–60 days. Following that period, submitted comments will be reviewed and addressed before the final standards are submitted to the Board for adoption.
