PCORI's Executive Director and Board Chairperson describe the past year as “very productive” in the organization’s efforts to support comparative clinical effectiveness research.
PCORI has made significant progress in its mission to fund, produce and promote high-integrity, evidence-based information that comes from research guided by patients, caregivers, and the broader healthcare community.
Three projects have generated promising results about dealing with chronic pain, identifying the best option for bariatric surgery, and using online-based health care.
Three high-impact projects will expand their findings and interventions. They focus on managing type 2 diabetes, promoting family engagement to avoid adverse events, and addressing chest pains.
Several developments illustrate PCORI’s influence on the broader research community, adoption of the concept of patient-inclusive research, including processes and tools and funding opportunities.
In fiscal year 2019, PCORI continues to fund patient-centered research and other initiatives, with a greater focus on the specificity of our pipeline of research topics and promoting the swift uptake of the findings into practice.
PCORI has taken several steps to meet its strategic goals and the mandates of its authorizing legislation. This includes updating its governance framework and expanding its research methodology standards.
PCORI’s authorizing law requires the organization to outline its budget and disclose all personal and financial associations of its Board and Methodology Committee members and executive staff.
Patient-centered research empowers patient populations to share their personal experiences to inform the design and real-world application of research.
