PCORI approves $254 million to fund 28 new research studies addressing urgent health problems

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors today approved $254 million in funding for 28 new research studies aimed at eliminating disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality, preventing suicide among young people, and improving behavioral health, maternal and infant outcomes, cancer care, surgical care and outcomes for people with chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors today approved $34 million to fund seven comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) studies designed to improve care for health conditions that impose high burdens on patients, their families and the health care system. They also acknowledged its newest seven board members, appointed by the US Government Accountability Office in late September, at their first public meeting.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors today, building on its rapid response to the COVID-19 health crisis, approved allocating up to $50 million in additional funding for new projects in PCORI’s COVID-19 funding opportunities, as well as enhancements to existing PCORI-funded studies. The research will help provide answers to difficult COVID-19 related questions faced by patients, providers and health systems.
