About Us

Today, PCORI is launching a new funding announcement under the Pipeline to Proposal (P2P) funding initiative. Unlike previous P2P opportunities, the Independent Tier III funding mechanism targets already-established partnerships of researchers and patients that need support to develop an application to submit for PCORI research funding.

The goals of the P2P program are to build a community with the expertise and passion to participate in patient-centered outcomes research, and to create research partnerships within that community that lead to high-quality research proposals. Previous P2P opportunities have funded creation and development of partnerships. The partnerships developed through Tier I and II awards will have a separate opportunity to apply for Tier III funding.

With the Independent Tier III awards, we aim to further expand the cadre of teams ready to perform patient-centered outcomes research. These awards will go to well-established partnerships—each including at least one patient and one researcher—with a track record of successful research and having already identified a research question. The awards will give these partnerships, which are “almost there,” the opportunity to receive training, as needed, on patient engagement and research methodology.

The goal of the Independent Tier III awards is scientifically rigorous, patient-centered outcomes research proposals with strong engagement plans. During their project period, awardees are required to submit a letter of intent (LOI) to a PCORI Funding Announcement.

We expect to make up to 50 Independent Tier III awards of $50,000, each for a 9-month period. The deadline to submit a competitive LOI for these awards is June 30, 2016; the deadline for applications from partnerships invited to submit is September 30, 2016.

We encourage LOIs from teams that have previously submitted proposals for PCORI research funding and received recommendations to strengthen their engagement plans.
