PCORI-funded studies should capture, as appropriate, the full range of clinical and patient-centered outcomes. This includes costs, other economic burdens and impacts on patients and families. These are the potential burdens and economic impacts of the utilization of medical treatments, items and services on different stakeholders and decision makers consistent with PCORI’s Principles for the Consideration of the Full Range of Outcomes Data in PCORI-Funded Research.

Thus, PCORI is particularly interested in applications under the Engagement Award: Stakeholder Convening Support funding announcement for convenings focused on better understanding appropriate and relevant potential burdens and economic impacts, including costs, identifying sources of appropriate data or gaps in data and opportunities to advance the rigor when conducting research that considers the full range of outcomes data, consistent with the PCORI Principles. Advancing the fundamental basis of data collection and methodology in this area is critical to ensuring that PCORI-funded research is appropriately considering the full range of outcomes data.

Please Note: Special Areas of Interest exist to encourage submissions on a topic, not to limit submissions to that topic only. PCORI welcomes Engagement Award: Stakeholder Convening Support Letters of Intent (LOIs) for convenings on all topics with a clear focus on and commitment to patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research CER) that falls within the guidelines of the program.

PCORI is seeking applications from organizations engaged in advancing patient-centered care, specifically as it relates to better understanding appropriate and relevant patient-centered potential burdens and economic impacts data and/or refining methodologies to capture and consider patient-centered perspectives and preferences in patient-centered CER. PCORI is particularly interested in applications from organizations seeking to build collaborations or partnerships with diverse stakeholders to advance consideration of patient-centered potential burdens and economic impacts in patient-centered CER and/or other healthcare decision making.

Responsiveness Considerations

Please note that while PCORI-funded research should capture, as appropriate, potential burdens and economic impacts, PCORI’s authorizing law includes a prohibition on the development or employment of dollars-per-quality-adjusted life year (QALY) thresholds. Additionally, PCORI’s authorizing law, as amended, prohibits PCORI from mandating coverage, reimbursement or other policies for any public or private payer and prohibits PCORI-funded research from including practice guidelines, coverage recommendations or payment or policy recommendations. Consistent with these prohibitions, PCORI’s funding focuses on comparative clinical effectiveness research and PCORI does not fund the conduct of cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) or related types of economic evaluation.

Applications focused on QALY methods development or employment, development of practice guidelines, coverage recommendations, payment or policy recommendations or the conduct of CEA or related types of economic evaluation will be considered nonresponsive to this funding announcement and will be declined.

For organizations considering submitting an LOI for an Engagement Award: Stakeholder Convening Support focused on topics related to the full range of outcomes data, please review PCORI’s Principles for the Consideration of the Full Range of Outcomes Data in PCORI-Funded Research for additional context and implementation goals. Applicants for this special area of interest must request and have a program fit call with PCORI prior to submitting an LOI. Questions and requests for a program fit call may be directed to [email protected] with the subject line “Request for Consideration of Full Range of Outcomes Data Program Fit Discussion." Requests must be received by PCORI at least one week prior to the LOI submission deadline.
