Stephanie Buxhoeveden delivers the opening keynote address after an introduction by PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, MD, MPH |
Our opening plenary session put the voices of patients, caregivers, and their advocates front and center in a discussion of why their needs and values matter in health research and decision making. Stephanie Buxhoeveden, MSN, FNP-BC, MSCN, our opening keynote speaker, shared her story of being first a clinician and then a patient with multiple sclerosis. She also described the importance of patient involvement in guiding health research. The plenary panel then discussed changes that have been made -- and still need to be made -- in health research and delivery to be sure studies and outcomes that matter to patients become the rule rather than the exception.
