Making Good Use of Big Data: Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Implications for CER
- -
2020 PCORI Virtual Annual Meeting Breakout Session
Big (health) data, amassed from numerous sources—electronic health records, clinical research studies, claims data, wearables, and many more—has great potential to improve care and drive innovation in patient-centered healthcare research. Machine learning and artificial intelligence are tools that enhance our ability to organize and analyze huge data sets and are increasingly embedded in a wide array of clinical contexts, medical products, apps, and care delivery models. Evaluating the ability of these products and services to generate rigorous comparative effectiveness research (CER) evidence that will be of value to multiple stakeholders presents both opportunities and challenges. In this session, we will draw on the insights from PCORI’s portfolio in discussing these considerations.
