In recognition of Bladder Health Month in November, PCORI hosted a public Wikipedia edit-a-thon focused on updating Wikipedia articles with information about urinary incontinence (UI).
The two-hour webinar introduced Wikipedia and how basic Wikipedia editing works. Participants learned about how Wikipedia actively monitors the editing of medical and health-related articles. Attendees also edited articles in real-time during the session.
The session ended with a debrief and suggested next steps and ongoing support. No previous Wikipedia editing experience was expected of participants.
Wikipedia is a well-known and well-used resource visited by over 500 million people a month, including patients, families, medical students, and clinicians. Integrating research findings into health and healthcare-related Wikipedia articles can help reach people where they are seeking information.
