The PCORI Annual Meeting brings together members of the healthcare community, including researchers, patients, caregivers, clinicians, insurers, health system representatives, and other stakeholders. The event serves as a report to the nation on PCORI’s progress in funding initiatives to determine which care approaches work best, for whom, and under what circumstances.
After three years of joining from your home or office, PCORI is excited to welcome attendees back in person and virtually to the 2023 PCORI Annual Meeting. The meeting will offer attendees accessible learning and networking opportunities.
PCORI invites awardees and project partners to submit an abstract for a poster presentation highlighting their results, activities, and lessons learned. To meet the needs of our stakeholder communities, PCORI encourages diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds to be reflected in posters and presenters. PCORI strongly encourages project teams to submit abstracts that reflect collaboration with a range of end-user stakeholders and engage patients/consumers who are representative of the groups most affected by the condition or care delivery issue the intervention seeks to address. Where possible, PCORI also encourages project teams to coauthor their work with stakeholder partners.
Submit your abstract using one of the forms below, based on your submission type, by 5 pm (ET) on April 11, 2023.
The poster session will be open to all attendees. Posters will be presented at fixed times on October 4-6 and one presenter for each poster must be available to attend in person and engage with meeting attendees. Poster times will be shared once the Annual Meeting agenda is finalized.
Eligibility Requirements
- Any PCORI-funded project team member or individual significantly involved in a PCORI-funded project may apply, including those that have been recently awarded or completed.
- The contract must be in good standing regarding PCORI requirements and milestones.
- Presenters must commit to attending the PCORI Annual Meeting and be available to discuss the poster with other attendees during the designated poster sessions.
- Submissions must meet all eligibility requirements specific to the submission type, as outlined below.
Guidelines by Submission Type
Dissemination and Implementation Awardees
Abstract submissions under this type must come from Dissemination and Implementation (D&I) Award recipients, including awardees from the following PFAs: Open Competition—Implementation of Findings from PCORI’s Research Investments, Limited Competition—Implementation Awards, and the Implementation of Effective Shared Decision Making Approaches in Practice Settings. Poster abstracts will include a brief description of the original research study findings, but the primary focus of the poster should be on the D&I project. Only one poster abstract submission is allowed per project. You must have received funding notification on or before March 15, 2023, to be eligible.
Abstracts will be reviewed based on the following criteria:
- Does the abstract focus on your D&I project?
- Does the abstract respond effectively to all sections in the abstract submission guidelines?
- Is the abstract clear and well-written (i.e., easy to understand, no jargon, concise, etc.)?
- Will it be of interest to others?
Submission Form for Dissemination and Implementation Awardees
Engagement Awardees
Abstract submissions under this type must come from PCORI engagement awardees and highlight the activities and lessons learned from their projects. This year’s poster session will allow attendees to learn how organizations are building patient and stakeholder capacity to participate as partners in patient-centered outcomes research from topic generation through the dissemination of research results.
Eligibility Information:
- You must be at least halfway through the contract period by April 1, 2023.
- Projects completed prior to September 30, 2022, are not eligible.
- Preference will be given to awardees who have not previously presented a poster at a PCORI Annual Meeting.
Abstracts will be reviewed based on the following criteria:
- Does the abstract focus on increasing patient or other stakeholder engagement in the research and/or disseminating PCORI-funded research results?
- Does the abstract present information that could be used by others in their engagement and/or dissemination work?
- Is the abstract topic generalizable/of potential interest to others outside of the awardee organization?
- Does the abstract describe the motivation, goal, method, and conclusion clearly and concisely (i.e., well-written, easy to understand, no jargon, etc.)?

Research Powered by PCORnet®
Abstract submissions under this type must come from PCORI-funded research studies powered by PCORnet® and highlight successful infrastructure innovations, engagement best practices, research results, and/or lessons learned through the use of the PCORnet infrastructure. This year’s poster session will provide an opportunity to highlight research projects that utilize PCORnet infrastructure including data, engagement, and research resources.
Abstracts will be reviewed using the following criteria:
- Study must be a PCORI-funded research study powered by PCORnet (i.e., feature PCORnet infrastructure and resources)
- Study must be in current good standing (or complete).
- Abstracts written in plain language, that can be easily understood and appreciated by a lay audience, will be prioritized over those that assume scientific expertise in the topic area.

Research Awardees
(Engagement Practices, Methods, and Results)
Abstract submissions under this type must come from PCORI research awardees and focus on engagement activities within PCORI-funded research studies. This is an opportunity to highlight how engagement activities have influenced the approaches and outcomes of PCORI-funded studies or have influenced broader institutional changes in the conduct and culture of health research. We encourage study teams to coauthor their work with stakeholder partners. Posters will be reviewed based on the following criteria:

- Contract effective date must precede January 1, 2023.
- Study must be in current good standing (or complete).
Abstracts will be reviewed based on the following criteria:
- Does the submission focus on the influence and impact of engagement activities? Influence and impact may be on the planning, conduct, or implementation of the study; the dissemination of findings; or institutional policies, programs, or practices.
- Does the submission share engagement learnings, practices, or tools that would be beneficial to other research teams? For example, these may include strategies for involving members of groups underrepresented in research, tools to measure the impact of engagement, tactics used to prepare stakeholders and researchers in working collaboratively, or methods used to support equitable decision making.
- Abstracts submitted by study teams that engage with a range of end-user stakeholders and engage patients/consumers that are representative of the groups most affected by the condition or care delivery issue which the intervention seeks to address will be prioritized.
- Submissions should respond effectively to all sections in the abstract submission guidelines, be clear and well-written (i.e., easy to understand, no jargon, concise, etc.), and of interest to others.

Research Awardees

Abstract submissions under this type must come from PCORI research awardees and focus on an important patient-centered comparative effectiveness research question that addresses a well-documented evidence gap. Posters should include the causal pathway from intervention to outcomes, research methods, and either primary results or preliminary or incidental findings from the PCORI-funded project. This is an opportunity to highlight how the research addresses a decisional dilemma for patients, clinicians, or other stakeholders or how findings to date have influenced clinical practice.
Abstracts will be reviewed using the following criteria:
- Contract effective date must precede January 1, 2023.
- Study must be in current good standing (or complete).
- Submissions should feature new material that has not been presented at a previous PCORI Annual Meeting. Focusing on a new finding since the project was first presented would be acceptable.
- Submissions that focus on PCORI priority topics, or findings relevant to priority populations, are encouraged.
- Abstracts written in plain language, that can be easily understood and appreciated by a lay audience, will be prioritized over those that assume scientific expertise in the topic area.

Abstract Submission FAQs
Q: Can I submit more than one poster abstract?
A: Yes, but each abstract should reflect different perspectives on the project (e.g., patient partner versus researcher), except for Dissemination & Implementation awards. Please keep in mind the specific requirements for each submission type.
Q: Should I submit an electronic version of my poster when completing my abstract submission?
A: No. Only the poster abstract is needed for this application.
Q: Can I use a poster that I prepared for a different conference?
A: Yes, but you must still submit an abstract and meet the eligibility criteria to be invited. If invited, the poster must reflect your abstract submission.
Q: My PCORI contract has ended and my project is completed. Am I eligible to apply?
A: Yes, those with completed projects are eligible to apply, except Engagement Awards completed before September 2022.
Q: Must the principal investigator submit the abstract and present the poster (if selected)?
A: Any team member who is or has been significantly involved in the project may submit the abstract and present the poster. This may also include the project manager, research assistant, patient/stakeholder partner, or engagement manager/coordinator/lead. PCORI strongly encourages poster abstracts that reflect diverse perspectives of projects.
Q: Does the poster have to be entirely based on the project activities funded by PCORI?
A: Yes. The poster should focus primarily on PCORI-funded activities. However, if there is other non-PCORI-funded work that is directly related to your project, you may include it (along with a reference/footnote to any other funding sources).
Q. How will I know that my abstract has been accepted?
A. PCORI will notify you of your submission status by May 8, 2023.
Q: Our team presented a poster last year. May we submit an abstract for this poster session?
A: Yes, we welcome repeat presenters, as long as you can report updated information such as the progress of your project (barriers and successes), lessons learned, or other findings to date. PCORI encourages you to consider submitting an abstract that reflects diverse perspectives of the project.
Q: If my abstract is invited, when will my poster be due?
A: Final posters are due August 11, 2023, and must be submitted to PCORI in PowerPoint form.
