In the United States, appendicitis affects nearly 300,00 people a year and is most commonly treated with surgery. A PCORI-funded study compared surgery versus antibiotics for treating adult patients with uncomplicated appendicitis. The findings add to the evidence that antibiotics may be a viable treatment option. This study is the largest randomized controlled trial of appendicitis treatment to date.
