With a clinical background in critical care and more than 25 years of global experience in the development of new medical products, Karen Giuliano has a passion for improving health care through innovation. In 2012, she received the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation Professional Achievement Award for excellence in medical product innovation. Her expertise includes human-centered design and clinical outcomes research.
She actively contributes to many professional organizations, including the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices. Her current interdisciplinary program of research is focused in two main areas: nonventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia and IV infusion safety using IV smart pumps.
Giuliano is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and a six-sigma green belt. She holds a bachelor of science in nursing and a doctorate in nursing from Boston College, a nurse practitioner certification from the University of Massachusetts, and a master of business administration (global management concentration) from Babson College. She completed a postdoctoral research fellowship on IV infusion device safety at Yale University.
Karen served as a member of the Advisory Panel on Clinical Effectiveness Decision Science from August 2020 to August 2023.
