Project Summary

We are requesting funding from the PCORI Tier I to assist the Comadre a Comadre program, a peer-based culturally-linguistically competent community-based program for Hispanic/Latina women with breast cancer, to further our efforts to build partnership with patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other healthcare stakeholders. The program is well respected by patients and clinicians alike and therefore well positioned to enhance partnerships with survivors, peer patient navigators, and clinicians. The program can provide the leadership to form these strong partnerships and thereby ultimately improve the oncological care of Hispanic/Latina women with breast cancer.

Critical issues that have been reported by our partners include: improving the patient-provider relationship; understanding Spanish medical interpretation in the clinical encounter; identifying the psychosocial needs of patients in the clinical encounter; and developing a proposed “one-stop shop” breast care center. We believe that this funding mechanism will assist in forging these partnerships among patients and providers so that we can further expand our skills to ultimately develop a patient-centered comparative effectiveness research (CER) project. We propose to utilize the nine-month period of this funding initiative to develop these ideas that address the cancer care concerns of interest to all the members who will participate in our partnership so that we can truly provide optimal cancer care for women in our state.
