Beverly Rogers
Northwestern University – Advisor

Beverly Rogers’ degree in communications was an asset for a career in diverse healthcare-related organizations. It provided a foundation for acquiring experience and knowledge about navigating the healthcare system for the elderly, for women, and for those who are unable to speak for themselves. Rogers became a passionate advocate when providing care and support for her mother’s journey from hospital to skilled nursing to hospice. It wasn’t until her husband of 41 years was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease that she understood what it meant to be a caregiver. For 13 years, she and her husband were revolving-door clients for hospitals, nursing homes, daycare agencies, and hospice. Rogers was his advocate to ensure he received respect as well as quality care until he passed away. Because of these life challenges, Rogers made a commitment to be a voice for other caregivers who traveled the road with her, or after her, by creating a caregiver support group that met at her church. Being a PCORI Ambassador for two years has given her the opportunity to express the perspectives of family caregivers and elderly patients. Additionally, she has been able to introduce research projects into a community that resisted or did not trust the system. It has been a privilege for Rogers to participate in projects funded by the Eugene Washington Engagement Awards. Introducing studies to the community has been very rewarding as more people begin to understand the importance of adding their voice to research. It is her desire to continue designing, reviewing, and disseminating healthcare information that offers people choices for their best well-being.
