Debra Barksdale, PhD, RN, FAAN is Professor and Associate Dean of Academic Programs at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond VA. She is an innovative leader as well as an educator, researcher, and certified nurse practitioner. Her research program focuses on psychological and physical stress, coping, and cardiovascular responses in African Americans. Dr. Barksdale holds a PhD from the University of Michigan, a MSN from Howard University, and a BSN from the University of Virginia. In addition, she obtained a Post-Master Certificate in teaching from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Dr. Barksdale is certified as a family nurse practitioner (NP), an adult NP, and a nurse educator. She is a Fellow of the both the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Nursing. In addition, she is also former Department of Health and Human Services Primary Health Care Policy Fellow.

Barksdale served on the Board of Governors from September 2010 to September 2018.
