Henry Sacks, MD, PhD, is Professor of Environmental Medicine & Public Health, Medicine (Infectious Diseases), Pediatrics, and Geriatrics, and Director of the Thomas C. Chalmers Clinical Trials Unit at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). His career goals have been to apply the principles of evidence-based medicine to answer important clinical questions in areas of new scientific inquiry (including HIV infection and geriatrics). His work has been in two categories: (a) the design, conduct, and analysis of clinical trials and natural history studies to provide new data to directly answer clinical questions and (b) synthesis of existing data, by meta-analysis and decision analysis, to provide guidance for urgent clinical problems for which primary data are not (or not yet) available. He has over 25 years’ experience designing, conducting, and analyzing clinical trials and observational studies, and has been principal investigator on numerous NIH-sponsored studies. He teaches courses on methods of clinical research and runs the Research Ethics practicum in the ISMMS-Clarkson Research Ethics master’s degree program. He also works on Fogarty International Training Grants to teach clinical research ethics in Eastern Europe.
