Jason Kirchick
University of Vermont Medical Center – Patient Family Advisor
University of Vermont, College of Nursing & Health Sciences – Board Member

Jason Kirchick, RN, is a survivor of the H1N1 influenza virus. Within days of its onset, he was hospitalized, intubated, and put in an induced coma for several weeks, due to multi-organ failure, septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and pneumonia. Realizing how extremely fortunate he was to have survived that ordeal, he wanted to make nursing and public health his life’s work. Kirchick serves on the advisory board at the University of Vermont College of Nursing and Health Sciences and is a patient family advisor at the University of Vermont Medical Center, where he has had the privilege to be involved in multiple research projects and several aspects of the research process. He continues to share his experience at conferences and orientations for the university and medical center, educating others on patient- and family-centered care. He is completing his Master of Public Health at the University of New England while working on his own research on communication barriers of mechanically ventilated patients in the intensive care unit. He is also a registered nurse and works in home health with pediatric clients who require 24/7 skilled nursing care and interventions. As he moves on to doctoral studies, he hopes to focus on patient- and family-centered care (PFCC), and in particular, how PFCC curriculum is being integrated into higher education programs for health professionals.
