M. Danet Lapiz-Bluhm

M. Danet Lapiz-Bluhm is a registered nurse of Asia-Pacific heritage with graduate degrees in neuroscience and clinical investigation. Having been raised in the Philippines and educated in different parts of the world, she has observed how stress and trauma transcend social boundaries and affect health. This experience has influenced her program of science, which focuses on the health of vulnerable populations, especially related to stress. She has a track record in research on preclinical models for neuropsychiatric disorders, investigating the neurobiological and behavioral mechanisms associated with the effects of stress. At the School of Nursing at UT Health San Antonio, Lapiz-Bluhm has engaged in translational clinical research on post-traumatic stress disorder as well as education-based and community service-based diversity research to improve patient-centered outcomes. Funding from PCORI provided opportunities to build capacity and engage Veterans and Filipino-Americans on patient-centered outcomes research and advocacy, and as full partners of research. Her main goal is to improve patient outcomes, especially among vulnerable populations. Through funding from PCORI, Lapiz-Bluhm has learned to work and engage with communities to make sustainable advancements to promote patient outcomes, especially among less-researched, vulnerable and underrepresented racial and ethnic populations. She believes in the PCORI approach of engaging stakeholders and communities to be full partners of research as a viable way for communities to take ownership of their health and move forward their health research agenda. As ambassador, she aims to promote the work of PCORI and continue engaging diverse underrepresented populations as well as clinician and research teams to do research the "PCORI way."
