After receiving master’s-level training in public health policy, Melissa Cornish’s time spent evaluating small rural hospitals and healthcare systems across the U.S. and collecting biospecimen for a community-based registry was a diversion from her plans. But those experiences provided her with insights that are both impacted by health policy and direct recipients of PCOR. In her registry work, she worked with clinical staff to recruit and retain study participants, initiate study start-up, and facilitate community discussions to benefit and support solicitations for external funding. She was closely engaged with study leadership to integrate community members and perspectives into several study opportunities. She became a PCORI Ambassador to learn more about how she can enhance her role as a grants consultant and because she understands and values the engagement of the patient and family, having been a patient advocate and ambassador for a number of loved ones during their end-of-life experiences.
