Sindy N. Escobar-Alvarez is a Senior Program Officer for Medical Research at the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF), where she is responsible for the Clinical Scientist Development Award, a core program that supports research of early-career physician scientists, and the Innovations in Clinical Research Award program, which advances research and treatments in sickle cell disease. While at DDCF, she has coordinated peer review for these programs and liaised with active grantees to monitor scientific progress. She also conducts quantitative and qualitative evaluations of program impact. Her professional experience spans academia, biotechnology, and philanthropy, and her research in cancer mitochondria biology was published in peer-reviewed journals and produced a patent licensed for rational anticancer drug development. She completed doctoral and postdoctoral training in the Pharmacology Department at Cornell University Weill Graduate School and Sloan-Kettering Institute.
Escobar-Alvarez served as a member of the Advisory Panel on Rare Disease from April 2014 - April 2017.
