Virginia Fitzsimons is a graduate of Columbia University’s Teachers’ College. She has spent the past 40 years teaching nursing at the college level. Also, having been educated in the New York City University system, she fully understands how imperative it is to offer free education to lower-income individuals. Upon receiving her doctorate, she chose to work in a New Jersey state college, where she has devoted her career to helping other nurses advance their careers. As a curriculum and instructional specialist, Fitzsimons wrote, initiated, and implemented a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing, and Doctorate program at the college. Over 3,500 graduates later, Fitzsimons is now retired; however, she remains active in research and student development. PCORI has some education-related projects that interest her, and the PCORI Ambassador Program gives her the opportunity to disseminate the positive outcomes of patient-centered outcomes research and to network with vast and diverse populations of other healthcare professionals.
