Project Summary

Engaging women with diabetes around setting research and health priorities is crucial to ensure relevant, patient-centered research, policies, and advocacy agendas. Co–Project Leads Wendy Bennett, MD, MPH, and Wanda Nicholson, MD, MPH, MBA, submitted this project application. In partnership with DiabetesSisters and a Stakeholder Advisory Board, this project will create an online social network called The DiabetesSisters Network to engage women living with diabetes about important, unanswered research and health questions. We will publish these top questions in a final report, and will assess the impact of the report on shaping research, policy, and advocacy. The results of our study have potential to change and improve upon technology-based approaches to engage patients about research and health care priorities, specifically for women with diabetes. Ultimately, we anticipate the final report to influence and change the focus of future research and health care delivery to improve the health of women living with diabetes.

The projected outputs from this project are the creation of an online social network (DiabetesSistersNet) to engage women living with diabetes about important, unanswered research and health questions; and the development and dissemination of the “Patient-Centered Women’s Health and Diabetes Report.”

Project collaborators include Stakeholder Advisory Board Members; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Diabetes Sisters, Inc.;  TrustNetMD; and project participants.
