The Southeast Regional Clinicians Network, administered by the National Center for Primary Care at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), is a practice-based research network that consists of the federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) and state primary care associations (PCAs) in eight southeastern states: Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Florida. The network has had a longtime focus on patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) that reduces health disparities in the primary care safety net, but has not conducted a needs assessment of regional stakeholders in recent years.
To address this problem, we will focus on three main activities: 1) conduct listening sessions and focus groups in each state to identify state-specific needs and issues related to PCOR; 2) build a web-based interactive platform to communicate with the network around PCOR issues as well as launch a social media campaign to maintain stakeholder engagement; and 3) convene PCOR stakeholders from each state at a conference at MSM to set a research agenda, identify a steering committee, and provide exposure to experts in the arenas of practice-based research and patient-centered outcomes research.
Key stakeholders identified for listening sessions in each state, who will then be engaged to attend the regional conference, will include patient board members of FQHCs and PCAs, quality improvement staff, physicians, providers, nurses, clinic administrators, clinic leaders, state PCA leaders, and PCA board members. Stakeholders will be engaged with the assistance of state PCA leadership at state PCA meetings, which are a convening of a broad group of each state’s stakeholders.
The main project collaborators include state PCA leaders and FQHCs throughout the network. This conference award will promote needed infrastructure building, stakeholder engagement, and educational outreach around patient-centered outcomes research in the primary care safety net in order to produce a regional research/issue agenda, network steering committee, and executive committee that will enable the network to become a productive laboratory for PCOR that is responsive to the needs of the primary care safety net providers and patients in the southeastern United States.
