Periodontal disease (PD) is an inflammatory disease that affects millions of Americans. PD is often a co-morbid condition for patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or HIV/AIDS that may contribute to the severity of disease. The PerioPatient Project (P3) is a PCORI-funded Pipeline to Proposal project that brings patients and caregivers; stakeholders concerned with PD (e.g., dental hygienists, dentists, dental educators, policy makers); and dental researchers to develop a comparative effectiveness research (CER) question with results that will improve treatment for PD. Any realistic solution to effective treatment depends on oral healthcare practices that patients and caregivers are motivated follow in at-home care. Patient voices must contribute to the development of CER questions that will result in better home oral healthcare solutions for the treatment of PD. The P3 partnership is based on developing a patient community that will play a leading role in this P3 partnership project.
