Project Summary

During Tier I, we started a partnership to leverage our community organization, El Poder de Decidir (El Poder), to identify priorities about asthma in the underserved Hispanic community. We held six community meetings in which participants had the opportunity to voice their needs. These meetings generated preliminary ideas about comparative effectiveness research (CER) priorities for asthma in this population. In addition, we created a research advisory board that included patients, caregivers, community leaders, clinicians, and researchers. The main responsibility of the research board was to guide our project activities with an eye toward developing a more effective partnership between clinicians, patients, caregivers, and the larger community. Through the Tier I activities, El Poder has been able to gain firsthand knowledge on how asthma affects this community and has solidified excellent relationships with numerous civic organizations, leaders, and members of the Hispanic community in New York City. Of particular note, the Northwell Health system has agreed to partner with El Poder as a sponsor and fiscal agent for the Tier II PCORI Pipeline to Proposal application. Northwell Health is the largest clinically integrated healthcare network in New York state and the nation’s seventh-largest physician group, with more than 400 ambulatory physician practices. For Tier II, we are proposing to leverage this partnership to focus on the three CER ideas identified during Tier I and to prioritize which idea is likely to have the greatest impact on the underserved Hispanic asthma community.
