Project Summary

Awarded Under the AHRQ-PCORI Institutional Mentored Career Development Program (K12)

In September 2018, PCORI and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) announced awards totaling $40 million over five years to 11 institutions to establish Learning Health Systems (LHS) Centers of Excellence, listed below. These Centers of Excellence are part of the LHS Researcher Training Program, which utilizes the joint AHRQ-PCORI K12 Institutional Mentored Career Development Program to train clinical and research scientists to conduct patient-centered outcomes research within learning health systems.

The initiative is focused on training researchers who can support the generation, adoption, and application of evidence to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes. The program incorporates the PCORI Methodology Standards and requires awardees to address how patient-centeredness, patient engagement, health disparities, and health equity will be incorporated in the training plans and ideally operationalized into scholars’ research projects. The program builds on the work of a Technical Expert Panel, convened by AHRQ in 2016 to develop a framework and competencies for learning health system researchers. The panel included PCORI representation.

A Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) was released in September 2017, with a corresponding application deadline in January 2018. Eleven institutions were subsequently selected for funding to develop Learning Health Systems Centers of Excellence, and are listed below.
