Project Summary

The main goals of MedStar Health’s Capacity Building Project are to strengthen its 1) operational infrastructure and 2) health information technology, data and evaluation infrastructure. The activities to strengthen the operational infrastructure include establishing central HSII operational leadership, central HSII proposal development support, fostering buy-in and engagement through initial and quarterly key stakeholder meetings, developing a process for rapid review and decisions on proposal opportunities, developing a central HSII template toolbox and creating a central HSII tracking infrastructure. The activities to strengthen the data and evaluation infrastructure include establishing central HSII data infrastructure leadership, training implementation nurses in evaluation methods and developing a clinical workflow visualization tool. Managing large, multi-stakeholder, complex care delivery implementation initiatives requires the proper operational, data and evaluation infrastructure. Therefore, these activities will strengthen the organization’s ability to undertake future implementation projects and to conduct required program evaluation under HSII.

MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI) will lead capacity building efforts. While HSII is not designed for research, given MHRI’s experience and expertise in leading the operations, data and evaluation infrastructure for large, grant-funded, multi-stakeholder initiatives (both research and non-research), MHRI is best positioned to lead capacity building efforts. MHRI is also home to the MedStar Healthcare Delivery Research Network, which will lead efforts to strengthen the operational infrastructure. The Center for Biostatistics, Informatics, and Data Science is also housed within MHRI and will lead efforts to strengthen the data and evaluation infrastructure. MHRI also provides MedStar Health’s implementation science expertise for training implementation nurses in evaluation methods.

About HSII Capacity Building Projects
Funding for HSII Capacity Building Projects was the first funding opportunity available under HSII, to support HSII Participants’ efforts to prepare for successful implementation and program evaluation as part of HSII Implementation Projects. Through HSII, HSII Participants will undertake implementation projects to actively advance the adoption of new evidence, drawn from PCORI-funded research, into their care delivery settings.
