May 2023 — The law reauthorizing the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute's (PCORI) funding clarified that PCORI-funded studies should capture "the full range of clinical and patient-centered outcomes," specifically adding "the potential burdens and economic impacts" of healthcare services to the existing patient-centered outcomes and clinical effectiveness measures.

In response, PCORI initiated a multistep process to implement this provision by working to refine its guidance to applicants, and the broader healthcare community, on how PCORI-funded studies should capture data.

In this report, we summarize our learnings on how stakeholders define patient-centered value, the main considerations as identified by patient groups and the broader health and healthcare community for identifying attributes and components of patient-centered value, their perspectives on measurements of patient-centered value, and future research needs. Key learnings on each of these topics are shown in the Executive Summary of the report and illustrate that there is no consensus on a definition of patient-centered value. Greater understanding among all stakeholders within and across different contexts is needed.
