Around 25 million Americans have asthma, including approximately 6 million children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The disease disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minorities. Compared with whites, African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos are more likely to have asthma, have worse health outcomes, use more healthcare services, and are at greater risk of death from asthma. PCORI supports about 20 patient-centered research and Engagement Award projects to help patients and those who care for them make better-informed decisions about prevention and treatment options.
